LEOSA Locations started as a database built by active officers, for active officers: which courthouses, hospitals, stadiums and venues let an officer carry under LEOSA, reported by people who walked through the door. The most common message we got from the start was from retired officers asking to join. Starting this week, they can.
What is open
Retired officers can now create an account at leosalocations.com/retired. Verification works differently than it does for active officers, because retired officers do not have an agency email address to check. Instead, a retired applicant provides three things: an agency-issued retired photo ID, a firearms qualification record from the last 12 months, and a live selfie taken in the browser. A reviewer compares them and approves the account, usually within a day or two. Verification lasts 12 months; after that, a new qualification record keeps it current.
What changes on the site
Facilities now carry two lines instead of one: what active officers have reported, and what retired officers have reported. Where no retired officer has checked in yet, the facility says so plainly rather than implying the active status applies. Retired check-ins are tagged, the map and list can be filtered by retired status, and a retired member's contributions are attributed to their agency with "(Ret.)" after it. Active officers' experience does not change, and active officers are never asked for credentials.
